19 years ago today, 'Tuesdays with Morrie' was published. It was written to help Morrie pay his medical bills as he died from ALS. It was a book I thought I'd be selling out of the trunk of my car. It has become one of the most important books I've ever written. It's been my honor and privilege to share Morrie with the world for the last two decades. And Morrie would be tickled to know that the teaching goes on...

message 13: by Mollie (last edited Aug 19, 2016 05:31PM) (new)

Mollie I was given this book in high school 16 years ago and it changed my life. I was like every other high school student already "dealing with heavy stuff" when my father had an accident causing him to become paralyzed. Everything fell apart around me. I didnt know what to do. I was completely lost, broken. On one of my worst days an english teacher of mine handed me a copy of Tuesdays with Morrie and it literally saved my life. I still revisit it at least every other year, to remind myself of how precious life is and that even in the most horrible of circumstances there is always hope and love. So thank you Mr. Albom for sharing Morrie with me. I never got to meet him but through you he has taught me strength that I never would have known without him.

message 34: by Grace (new)

Grace When I was in high school, my Students Out Serving class required me to read Tuesday with Morrie. It was a slow start at first, compliments of me dragging my feet. I knew it would be an emotional read when the teacher mentioned ALS. There weren't many in my class who were familiar with Lou Gehrig's disease, but I was. As I listened to the teacher explain to disease to the class, I thought of my mother. Not long after adopting my two sisters and me, she woke up blind. That was the day we met "Frank." My mother's MS. She slowly regained her vision and began losing control of everything else; like her plans to be a teacher, her emotions (more specifically, anger!), herself. And my sisters and I traded in our new kid scent for caretaker roles and "Frank." He ruled the house.

By 7th grade, I was 60-year-old state worker with an overwhelming case of burnout and hateful mouth. That's how it felt. Frank not only disabled her, he disabled the entire family, looking back now.

Love was the biggest thing we all did without.

When both of my sisters left home before the age of 18, I didn't understand it, but I planted my feet. Just as I was growing older, my parents were going older, too. I knew they needed me. Your book showed me that. Your book taught me she needed my love, regardless of the love she gives out. It helped me step outside of my caretaker perspective and showed me her losses, her struggles, and all of the words that she couldn't get out. She still can't. She never quite mastered the love, either. So, I allow my love to make up for that.

Thanks for changing my life. 16 years later, you still do. I collect every book that you write. I think on Tuesday's with Morrie every single day of my life. I never quite learned how to let love come in, but I finally learned how to let love flow out.

Does love always win? I'm not really sure, but it changes people. It saves people when they're in the dark, even when they're falling.

Your words will echo forever in the heart of this small town girl.
