I can't help but wonder what this story would be like if it had been written by a woman. Zweig frequently centralizes women who are devotedly obsessed with a clueless, selfish man, and I can't help but wonder why this is such a consistent theme for him. If this story were written by a woman, I can't help but think it would be more nuanced, as she would be seen as a human first and a woman second.
