It's fairly low stakes, low conflict so far. Main character waiting to turn Pretty after her best friend turned pretty. She met another Ugly who likes to explore and push the limits of the system.
I think I would've liked this book as a teenager because it reflects on the desire to be better looking and change your appearance.
