From the blurb, I was doubtful this was a Canadian-set mystery. But it starts off in Halifax and is a good way in before the action moves to New York. Since it’s written awhile ago and set in 1990, I guess they made it out to sound not Canadian so Canadians would buy it. I remember how hard it was back then to study Canadian authors in school & uni, never mind trying to find mysteries!

Very early on, I thought I knew whodunnit but not why. Later I thought again of that person as I saw part of why but not the full why and so couldn’t see it. Now everything, well, almost, has fallen into place. I kept reading because the mystery itself was clever, and the killer’s thinking interesting. But the characters except for the Sister make me roll my eyes. A little too much contrived stupidity.

This guy Collin’s is supposed to be a lawyer, I mean, the book opens with him asking probing questions. Yet he doesn’t even ask the obvious one here. What a moron!!! Seriously. I stopped reading. I want to know whodunnit. At least the mystery is twisty enough to be hard to solve. But I wonder how much it is because the MC doesn’t ask obvious questions and give the game away.

He seems to be doing what the police are often accused of doing: focussing on his theory instead of following what people are saying. It’s a little frustrating. Would a lawyer be that obtuse? Is unconscious bias coming into play as well? Is the author doing this as a reflection on the character or to draw the mystery out?

I have to say I’m enjoying the trial scene so far. Hoist by his own petard, as they say.
