PG 179 - The expedition visited the Arikara in S.D. Offered gifts but..."No Whiskey. The Captains offered it, but the Arikaras not only said no thanks, they shamed Lewis and Clark by remarking that 'they were surprised that their father should present to them a liquor which would make them act like fools.'

pg 170: Ambrose offers a "possible scenario" for what would have happened if there had been a violent confrontation between the Sioux and the Lewis and Clark party. He says it would have changed the whole history of North America.

p124-125: Jefferson thought that the pioneers could be persuaded to accept land in Illinois in exchange for their "holdings" to turn the land "west of the Mississippi...into a vast Indian reservation." (Already thinking of the native Americans as not people.) "Lewis must have known.." this wouldn't work but, it seems, to please the President, wrote that it might work "in the course of a few years."

I wanted to read a book about Thomas Jefferson and this one turns out to be more about the Lewis and Clark expedition, and specifically, about Meriwether Lewis. The print for this edition is very tiny and the writing is a bit stilted but it's not bad so far and I'm committed to continue.
