There are some inconsistencies in this series and it's starting to make me crazy. So, I read book 4 first (yeah, I'm a weirdo) and it said the parent lived in San Francisco, but they were going to "drive down" from LA. Geographically not possible. Anyway, book 1 says parents live in San Diego. Ah, ok. That makes more sense. Maybe it was a typo in book 4 (which was actually an ARC.) Nope.
