The chapter on the Soviet Bloc is actually really interesting, lots of anecdotal stuff in it that is cool. Again, it suffers from the topic of conversation shifting too much, from the rise of far right parties in Eastern Europe into the role Cuba played in medical assistance across the world. All welcome topics but it has an unclear focus and more chapters (or books) would be way better than this format.

I’m starting to get the impression that the best part of this book will be the researchers offhandedly mentioned. The conversational formatting and tone is just not suitable for the subject matter being discussed and leads to ideas not being meaningfully developed across the chapter.

No footnotes and twenty pages have gone by without focusing on a one or two or even three particular case studies. Bouncing from how neocolonial multi-national capital interests fund genocides, to how Western nations control information available to their citizens, to how hegemonic powers consider the periphery “unpeople”, is a lot of ground to cover in one chapter. Also no footnotes. Except one in the intro.
