I am definitely bumping up my rating to a five on this reread. This book is genuinely helping and healing me.

It is all very frustrating. Maybe I'm just too much of a modernist to enjoy it properly. Lucilla is the first Elizabeth Goudge character that I actively dislike.

Here is the thing. The eighteenth and seventeenth centuries feel far enough away that outdated views and prejudices don't bother me as much. This book is set in the 1940s, and it feels oddly recent. I hate how women, according to Lucilla, should have no ambition, and it's frustrating to see Nadine thwarted at every turn. She needs something for herself; she's too individual to be satisfied as a wife and mother.
