Getting extremely bored with this one, so am going to skip straight to the end.
I've never been a fan of that kind of writing that goes so atomic, it takes 25 pages for a character to eat a sandwich. Well written it may be, but 500 pages of non-stop German guilt is way too much.

We're spending too much time pre-WW2 and then with the modern (1990s) characters. Really hard scenes about fascism there, but nothing new on the topic. I want to go back to 1900 and the 1920s. Much more interesting to me those stories/characters.

On CD 8 of 12. Still very much enjoying this largely plotless historical novel.

The Dutch title of this is "The GIRL, The CITY and The DEVIL" which is a much more fitting title than "City of Smoke".
We've just learned that the devil was born in and confined to the city when it was little more than a collection of Dark Age huts. It's now the 20th century and he's rather attached himself to one family with a very unique child - the only one who can see him!

12-CD abridged version of a mega long novel.
Magical realism history of the city of Lübeck in the 20th century. So far, so interesting...

I don't think I could do it, either.
