I'm going to give this a second try

This is described as 'adventure fantasy,' but that's only 1 facet of the story & as far as exciting adventure goes - it's about as exciting as watching paint dry. The 2 other facets are Ki's backstory, telling how she got to this point of crossing the mountain pass with Vandien (the adventure) & the budding romance between the two. While the romance feels entirely natural & unforced, still - barf. So, backstory, meh.
