I just read the diaries of A. (Tommy) Lascelle’s, who was private secretary to George VI and Elizabeth II, and whose tenure included the abdication and WW2. A very well educated and erudite man, who was widely read and continued to enjoy reading throughout the entirety of his 90+ years, described this book as his personal favourite. He had read it as a boy and re read over 25 times by his own count!
