So, it took me until John used his hair to tease Jerry as part of a BJ to realize that it's still long. Now, earlier he blew a gasket when he realized the foster parents were still cutting his niece and nephew's hair after it already had been cut to mourn for their mom. But he DIDN'T cut his? I thought that was done for all close family, which he was given his outburst/regret about not being there for his sister? Hmm

I need to get my hands on the ebook version to see if there are any author's notes or an afterwards detailing whether this is based on true events. As I said previously, horribly enough it DOES sound likely...

Such a simple gesture but one that IMHO tells you what kind of case worker a person might be: getting down on the floor to play with the kids, on their level, meeting them on their terms. He didn't need to be gay, too...he won me over with how he treated the kids.

*fist pump* Yeah. Scenes like the standoff between them and the UWW on Jerry's porch make "The Good Fight" a perfectly fitting title.

Until the children are older I don't know of any state that requires a separate bedroom. Some states don't even require an ACTUAL bedroom; a pillow & blankets on a sofa in the den, a sleeping bag under the dining room table...just somewhere specifically THEIRS & with a place to store their belongings. Of COURSE you want better for them, but the point is to be with family, safe and cared for. That's what's important.

I really like the balanced POV from Jerry convincing John that the children's foster mom wasn't being malicious. That she wasn't trying to erase their Native heritage or brain-wash them. Do I think the SD Dept of Soc Svcs is deliberately removing Native children for the budget bump? Sounds horrifyingly possible as an official management policy. I hope there's no blanket blame of all the basic case workers, though.

Interesting (if almost stereotypical-sounding) narration choice for the Native American character, John Black Raven.
