A friend described it as ‘perhaps the greatest novel ever written’. Well, it was definitely amazing and astonishing. Even though long, and sometimes difficult to follow, the prose perfectly captured language and culture and character, over several centuries, and was economical and yet full of description. Loved it, and now i have much more of her work to explore…!
