My hands were shaking when I got into the car. I felt like I’d just gotten caught in the middle of something that was beyond my understanding. I didn’t grow up with parents, so I had no experience with parents fighting. I grew up with just my grandma. And the two of us rarely fought.

But one guy, a year ago, had seemed promising. He was an English teacher at a local high school. But after a few dates, he announced that he’d met a woman at his mother’s church and he thought he preferred her company to mine. There hadn’t been anyone truly serious since then. I was…strange. Men found me odd. I never really understood why, but I accepted that I was likely going to be alone for a long time.

He showed himself out and I…was it wrong that I was relieved to see him go? There was something about him that was incredibly intense. It was exhausting.
