Picked this up because apparently the mystery of Leonardo keeps intriguing me. But, as the book so honestly admits, it IS a mystery, and everything about his life pure speculation. This book is admirably philosophical and entertaining, but it even references Freud of all people (at least it doesn't 100% agree with him, but still, you can tell that the book is from the 80s when Freud is regarded as a genius!)

There's some filler about how things "must have felt" to Leonardo (as if we could ever know how anything "must feel" to anyone), but so far, I'm really enjoying the Firenze arc.
Yes, I know the city is called Florence in English, but it's Firenze in Italian, so I'm sticking with that.

But I also have to defend this book: it is level-headed and informed, and it doesn't blindly accept any established ideas we have of Leonardo. It's mix of humanity and intertextuality feels warm and old-school, and makes Leonardo feel like a similarly consoling figure in history.
