so far I have really liked the parts with the Douglas. much less so, the Sholto and Laurence follies.

the emphasis on torture goes up a bit. threats if the "you will wish for death" variety. directed at a child! such things are horrible to me, and will never be entertainment, for me.

against my expectations, Sholto has not emerged as a better-defined protagonist. it's him and/or his dad & brother, and/or other Douglases and partisans.
The women are better-drawn characters than the McKim men. These guys are dull to me.
The vengeance should be really good, anyway, with Sybilla involved.

I'm glad to be past it, but that was pretty well done.

I don't want them to kill Will Douglas, but inevitably they're gonna... so in some ways I'd like to just get past that.

getting invested in Sholto more. just like in The Grey Man, the flirting banter and sass is great. he's just the best at that.

it seems to be slowly getting around to making Sholto the protagonist? it would help if somebody was.

Whoa, looks like this book has the supernatural, where The Grey Man did not. At least, I sure think that's what just happened!
