I see "reading for the 2nd time" - what's this like? I've got it on a bookshelf looking at me but struggle to pick it up

This book is better this second time for me than the first time. Zola was at full robust power with this story of miners in the north east of France in the 1890s and their clash with their managers above the treacherous coal pits. If you want a hot blooded tale, I highly recommend Germinal.

That doesn't sound at all like what I've been expecting - I assumed it would be a somewhat muted morality tale that I admired without enjoying
