"However loving and sympathetic we try to be, however sound our psychology, however frank and open our behavior, we cannot penetrate the incognito of the other man, for there are no direct relationships, not even between soul and soul. Christ stands between us, and we can only get into touch with our neighbors through Him."

Certainly the NT would agree with you. I think the Platonists were right about 'shadows of ideals,' and I think Christ was referring to something similar on the Sermon on the Mount, when He says "even (you) who are evil" know how to show love to our children (I'm speaking broadly about humanity, not people personally)--but if you look at John 15:12-13, the Love that Christ demands us to show one another is subsuming; to give up one's life is a taller order than 'simply' martyrdom, which ends in but a moment... To give one's life for one's brother means in EVERY living moment. And I simply think it is impossible to be that selfless, all the time, without Christ.
