Matilda and grandfather are stuck in the middle of a dying city. They fled on September 8th and there were about a thousand dead. And now it's September 24th and she's wondering how many corpses there are now. Everybody says at least double that.

[SPOILER] Matilda's grandfather died and she is the only one left and is looking for food. At her grandfather's burying Matilda was mad at the men who were burying him because they were going to bury him without a prayer.

Grandfather and Matilda ate riding along with five fever kids. Matilda has been asked to stay with the fever kids and help without mothers knowledge. I think Matilda will not say to help.

Mattie had a nightmare that her grandfather had his troops aim their guns at her and shot. She saw two sheets with corpses and thought they were her grandfather and mother but weren't, her eyes are filled with tears. So far I am absolutely loving this book.
