his is ostensibly a manga about cheating, faithfulness and blah blah but its not moralising in the slightest. while characters shift through states of blame, shame and grief its all tied to depictions of desire as polymorphous, contradictory and overdetermined. guilt tells us of internalised stigmas that corral us into unsatisfying norms and no single person is to blame for that. we're all harmed by heteropatriarchy.

yet guilt also tells us of our own values. the desire to not cause pain to those equally harmed by a shared investment in heteronormativity. perhaps neither character truly wanted marriage, but it was all they could conceive in their adult infancy. and because they were told the alternative was solitude, unending.
