Just finished an entertaining Wilkie Collins story, and next is Freeman Wills Crofts…so, I’m happy, but these may not be ‘The Best Crime Stories Ever Told’. Number one, we need more murder! Secondly, it’s my impression that, later on, this book turns into a book of Horror tales. That’s weird. I can see why people don’t rate this strange book highly. Forgetting the overblown mis-titling, I’m having fun.

I can only reiterate that no matter how good one might find any of the stories here, this was one ill-advised anthology. It's called The Best Crime Stories Ever Told...but then, after six Crime stories (that I would say are far from the best ever told), it turns into twenty Horror tales. There is no way to rate this book highly; you can't label a book a Crime anthology, and the serve up mostly Horror & Supernatural!

‘The Prayer’, by Violet Hunt, was a bit of a recovery from what’s been going on in this book for a while, and as depressing as it was, I liked it a lot. This book is relentlessly perplexing…most of the stories are Horror stories, not Crime tales. The title of the book is completely misleading. It does taint one’s attitude to the book.
