I think a significant plot hole in the story so far is that it doesn't take into account the tendency of people to upskill in response to the financial incentives offered by the economy. In a world where linguistics is by far and away the most lucrative profession on earth, there is no way you would have only 4 people studying linguistics at the largest department in the most powerful country on Earth.
