Narrator, Matt Freeman, is positively the worst character imaginable. He's a compulsive liar to himself and the world. Since the book is in first person it's actually tricky to decide were reality starts and Matt's lies begin. The story really occurs is just in Matt's head with reality intruding occasionally. The reader is rather like a voyeur looking into the voyeur's mind.
