Where she is so visible in the script are the only moments making this book worth it. It is sad to have to directly reckon with the flaws of your idol - glorifying europeanness always, eerily acknowledging hate without ever addressing it, in this book sontag is a white exceptionalist - yet this reckoning too is a form of intimacy, and to truly het to know someone requires criticism and hate.
