i think even critical psych, at the end of the day, falls under the broader umbrella of the psy-sciences. it is a lot better than mainstream psychology insofar as looking at power dynamics, systematic issues, social structures, contexts, etc., but most of it is purely theory. there are a few methodologies such as participatory and action oriented research, but they have a long way to go before reaching any satisfactory level according to me. it gives precedence to the one who's studied the subject formally, and can never align with antipsych/patient collective movements as such.

as someone who works in the boundaries of this discipline, and has been taught by professors who work in critical psych, it is definitely a lot more palatable and gives some hope towards reforming the subject. this book was also written long ago, and psych has evolved a lot from that time (both in good and bad ways). i just think there's so much wisdom that no academic language can ever contain or document, one that is present within communities and amongst individuals, so no discipline, however "critical" it may be, can truly account for that.

hi! i would certainly recommend this book as a starter. i also have a few research papers which i can share in dms if you'd like. there is a small list on my account with books on critical psych, i hope that can be helpful! i am also open to discussing the topic in detail in dms :)
