Absolutely marveling at the way Lansing incorporates the affairs of the men as they winter in the Antarctic night, stuck in the pack-ice. Loved reading about the pranks and events they indulged in, genuinely made me laugh. Superb descriptions of the significant men of the crew. Really captivating, intriguing read so far, with the added frills of humor that don’t take away from the topic at hand.

Lansing truly makes the harsh realities of each new situation and unfortunate new development clear and plain, in the tired lens of the eyes of the crewmen and captain, without harping too much on poignant details. You are told what is happening and how it is felt through the men with no lost attention to descriptive prose, yet given digestively and sometimes somewhat simply. Enjoyable and gripping to read.
