This novel stunned me. Superb writing and tension. What I thought was a historical fiction novel about repressed lesbians in the Netherlands quickly turned into something much darker—a gothic romance addressing the lingering impacts of WW2. van der Wouden gorgeously threaded suspense, desire, and trauma into this searing story. Cannot recommend more highly!
