He found that 75% of the children described the “Arab” as a murderer, one who kidnaps children, a criminal and a terrorist; 80% saw the Arab as someone dirty; 90% stated they believed that Palestinians had no rights whatsoever to the the land in Israel.

One of the most trivial points and one that seems to bother me the most is this notion of a “new name” for the country. It just seems so dismissive of the 3,000 year history of Palestine, and the fact that Palestine was always a pluralistic and inclusive society.

I have no doubt that the author has the best of intentions here. Nevertheless I have seen little here that addresses the very barbaric, militaristic, racist, and genocidal nature of Israeli society. There is a lot of hypothetical navel gazing here that simply ignores what a broken and failed state Israel has become.

Given the genocidal nature of contemporary Zionism it’s extremely difficult to take this book seriously. In all this discussion of decolonization there’s been zero discussion of the Western colonial sponsors. Israel is not a state. It’s a Western military outpost in the Middle East.

This is probably not the best time to be reading a book about decolonizing Israel as it wages a genocide in Gaza and launches an illegal and immoral war against the people of Iran. Nevertheless there is some really good analysis here and a solid understanding of power.

The analysis is solid but I keep wondering if there is anything left to save in Israeli society. Its bloodlust, warmongering and disregard for international norms makes it difficult to see how anything short of its complete destruction would be a mistake. Zionism cannot be reformed.
