Rather interesting to read in detail all of the dithering & dickering that followed Gorbachev's rise to power. Sure, we in the West loved his public image, but Russians certainly grew tired of him rather quickly.

A strong start to a book that is personalizing the 20 years of Soviet history that corresponds roughly w/ the first 20 years of my life. How funny to me that Brezhnev was the guy who brought the USSR to parity w/ the USA in terms of nuclear arms. . . and then found it all too costly to maintain.
