Mid-point through ‘Julie’
Very interesting 🧐. Has flavors of cultural isolation and conformity. Yes, the way that Julie is described at times is harsh but I think the character represents a ‘radical rebalance’. Fat can be beautiful but it can also be ugly. Beauty is the same. But even then, Julie’s body is not her own, it’s one that she’s been forced into and defies via sexuality.

Meh :/. Just alright. I do think this is a case of me not being able to relate and deeply understand the emotions of this story. It’s existential and emphasizes health anxiety and how it haunts us.

WOMEN DESERVE SO MUCH BETTER!!! 😭😭😭 truly heartbreaking and one of the scariest stories in the book. When we hear of violence plotted against our sex, we cannot help but to place ourselves in her shoes. And even when the evidence and pain so are so obvious, society is still so quick to dismiss women’s stories.

Just alright. Strange and haunting but not at novel and creeping as the other stories.

Deliciously weird and intimate. A reclamation of the female body and I LOVE the metaphorical transformation of the protag into something ancient, reptilian, and powerful as she modifies her body unorthodoxly. She is reclaiming her autonomy in a beautifully morbid way and I love the contrast of how the medical community treats women versus the body modification community.

Good! While not my favorite, it does give an excellent taste/example of the emerging modern horror scene of Hispanic women. Slow, oozing, and creeping horror that is so deeply permeated with the characters. Very interesting, need to research more.

Overall, loved Julie!!
It’s hard to explain but the story is relatable for a Latina. The ONLY thing is the description of Julie’s ass at the end took me out 💀💀💀 like why’d we have to talk bout that???

The Grace in which she rejected all of her parent’s hopeless vulgarity and how she had ‘ruined’ her body until it was grotesque as demonstration of the fact that even so it was beautiful in a place that we couldn’t reach.

I liked the slow burn body horror of this chapter. The loss of identity as the generational trauma of misogynistic violence is heart breaking :,(. This story has negative reviews but I understand it. Most of the reviewers are men or people who are interpreting the story too literally. It’s real with a mix of mythology.
