Toward the end, it is getting obvious that Howard wants to end his life - and Janet's. The world respectively the people in it are a hopeless mess. A nice final plot twist contrasts the opposing reactions to this quandary. Resignation or getting the best out of this mess for you.

Burgess has a distinct language and it's difficult to catch this in translation. The simple German used to let the narrator speak hasn't aged well. The idea of showing the protagonists with all their limitations and lack of education comes across though.
