Is it as mid as its haters say or are they being dramatic?

Extremely dramatic. I love the style, the very American feel of it, the humor, the cynicism, all of it. Like a lot of American novels around that time, it’s modernist in style, so while looking for where the ‘story’ starts and finishes, you end up missing out on everything else.
