For this alone on Death I wreak
The wrath that garners in my heart;
He put our lives so far apart
We cannot hear each other speak.
His inner day can never die,
His night of loss is always there.
Come; let us go: your cheeks are pale;
But half my life I leave behind...
Yet in these ears, till hearing dies,
One set slow bell seems to toll
The passing of the sweetest soul
That ever look'd with human eyes.

"Yea, too, myself from myself I guard,
For often a man's own angry pride
Is caps and bell for a fool."
"We are puppets...
Do we move ourselves, or are moved by an unseen hand at a game
That pushes us off from the board, & others ever succeed?
Ah yet, we cannot be kind to each other here for an hour;
We whisper, and hint, and chuckle, and grin at a brother’s shame;
However we brave it out, we men are a little breed."

"Ring out the grief that saps the mind
For those that here we see no more;
Ring out the feud of rich and poor,
Ring in redress to all mankind.
...
Ring out old shapes of foul disease;
Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;
Ring out the thousand wars of old,
Ring in the thousand years of peace."
"And on the depths of death there swims
The reflex of a human face."

"Dear is the memory of our wedded lives,
And dear the last embraces of our wives
And their warm tears: but all hath suffer'd change:
For surely now our household hearths are cold,
Our sons inherit us: our looks are strange:
And we should come like ghosts to trouble joy."
"Ah hark! they shout
'St. Simeon Stylites.' Why, if so,
God reaps a harvest in me. O my soul,
God reaps a harvest in thee."
