There’s a reason questioning isn’t done in groups, you’re all just giving the murdered information he or she can use to create their own alibi for the night before so the detective can’t catch them in a lie saying they were in the garden when it’s known two other people were talking in the garden.

I’m into the 3rd chapter and still haven’t been properly introduced to the MC, I have no idea what he actually does or why he’d really be going to see this man. Is he a writer, a Holmes-esque police consultant, some sort of legal expert? I know he’s got some retired friends and some gray hair but otherwise I’m in the dark here. Is this a thing, not introducing characters at the beginning of books, or what?
