In the book Ernaux writes about how reading through what she wrote about her and obsession for A produces the same emotions as seeing his bathrobe, the difference is that her words might mean something to someone else - someone who has experienced the same feelings - while the bathrobe will only ever mean something to her.

This book moved me greatly, I am one of the people she imagined who has felt what she's felt
