Maybe this is just a personal issue of mine, but I absolutely hate it when books that aren't mysteries have some big mysterious backstory that they just keep hinting at but never get any closer to. We're almost halfway through this book. Someone just sit down and explain to the poor girl what's the deal with Puffin Island.
