EVENING IN THE VILLAGE

“Here in the mountain village
Evening falls peacefully.
Half tipsy, I lounge in the
Doorway. The moon shines in the
Twilit sky. The breeze is so
Gentle the water is hardly
Ruffled. I have escaped from
Lies and trouble. I no longer
Have any importance. I
Do not miss my horses and
Chariots. Here at home I
Have plenty of pigs and chickens.” - Lu You (1125 - 1209)

BIOGRAPHY

The dog scatters her body in sleep,
paws, finding no ground, whip at air,
the unseen eyeballs reel deep, within.
And waking - crouches,
tacked to humility all day,
children ride her, stretch,
display the black purple lips,
pull hind legs to dance;
unaware that she tore bulls apart,
loosed heads of partridges,
dreamt blood.

TO A SQUIRREL AT KYLE-NA-NO

Come play with me;
Why should you run
Through the shaking tree
As though I'd a gun
To strike you dead?
When all I would do
Is to scratch your head
And let you go.

THE LADY AND THE TIGER

There was a young lady of Riga,
Who smiled as she rode on a tiger:
They returned from the ride
With the lady inside,
And a smile on the face of the tiger.

IMPROMPTU ON CHARLES II

God bless our good and gracious King,
Whose promise none relies on;
Who never said a foolish thing,
Nor ever did a wise one.

ELM TREE

“Come stranger, come beneath this elm
Where breezes soft caress;
And let the green of whispering leaves
Assuage your weariness.
Drink to your fill of my cool fount,
So fresh to wayworn feet,
And in the pleasure of my shade
Forget the burning heat.” - Anyte (3rd century BCE)
