Synchronicity: until Thursday night I believe I had never heard of nested Chinese boxes, just Russian (матрёшка) dolls. Then I watch The Man from Earth, with the line, "You know those Chinese boxes, one, inside the other, inside the other, inside the other…?" Now barely a day later, on p. 32 of this edition: "…the one author as lying inside the other, as in a Chinese-box puzzle."

This is a real doozy of an editorial introduction.

Seems like to be able at least to pretend to have read this would be nice.
