I wonder if the author was also annoyed with his own characters, because thankfully we don't get the terrible lovetriangle-drama via the perspective of the already established participants but through the eyes of Nadia. She is a real surrogate for me rolling her eyes at Maya and complaining about her japping.

Here we have the first character who is kind of likable ... if she had more personality or dimensions or motivation or deeper thoughts or ... anything. Nadia as a technician helping all teams is great for showing what is to be done in the first weeks of settling on Mars, but she remains a simple plot device.

I like the descriptions, I chuckle more often than expected and the political/philosophical discussions are interesting (while the technical stuff doesn't take too much space)... only I still don't like the characters very much. But taking occasional breaks to read something else helps.

Bit of a rough start because some elements aged poorly since 1992 and now sound a lot like casual racism and islamophobia. But jumping back in time with the second protagonist to get the story leading up to those events I start to enjoy the characters and details.
