Okay - the best story in Part One was the last one, 'The Regent's Park Murder' by Baroness Orczy. Now the book shifts to its longer section, called Mystery and Horror. It makes no sense that a book called The Best Crime Stories Ever Told is mostly full of Horror tales; plus the fact that most of the stories in Part One - Detection and Mystery - were nowhere near the best of the genre. Hmmmmm...

I can only reiterate that no matter how good one might find any of the stories here, this was one ill-advised anthology. It's called The Best Crime Stories Ever Told...but then, after six Crime stories (that I would say are far from the best ever told), it turns into twenty Horror tales. There is no way to rate this book highly; you can't label a book a Crime anthology, and the serve up mostly Horror & Supernatural!

‘The Prayer’, by Violet Hunt, was a bit of a recovery from what’s been going on in this book for a while, and as depressing as it was, I liked it a lot. This book is relentlessly perplexing…most of the stories are Horror stories, not Crime tales. The title of the book is completely misleading. It does taint one’s attitude to the book.
