But the most boring part for me is how the main characters are instantly obsessed with each other. Sure, love at first sight is a thing, I guess—but when the whole story is just “they’re both super hot and want to sleep together immediately,” it gets dull fast. I’d rather read about people actually falling in love, not just lusting after each other the second they lock eyes.

Then there’s the classic stuff like the vampire being obsessed with the girl’s scent, or the heroine constantly biting or chewing on her lips. I mean, how often do you actually see someone doing that in real life—aside from models in awkward ad photos trying to look “hot”? It just feels so cliché and overdone.

But there are a few things that really annoy me. Like, what’s with all the growling? Julian is constantly “growling” or making weird noises. Maybe I just have too vivid an imagination, but I can’t help picturing what that would sound like in real life—and it’s either hilarious or downright awful. Why do so many erotic authors love writing characters who growl or make animalistic sounds?

Okay, so I get it—this novel is basically a supernatural erotic fantasy, and I probably shouldn’t take it too seriously. I started reading it mostly because it’s easy for me to read in English as a non-native speaker, and honestly, I was kind of hoping for something a little cringey just for fun. And in that sense, the book totally delivers. Some of the dialogue and situations make me smile or even laugh.
