St. John on the moor infuriates me more deeply every time. And it is worse knowing that, even could he read my raging marginalia, he would take it as a persecution that confirms his martyrdom. The other side of the coin, I suppose, is that experience, as it grows, acquits Jane ever more firmly.

Just through Mason's visit. Noticing the allusion to the Greek Furies which pinpoints the parallel with chapter 1--which--oh my--what Jane might have become, and how she is identified here instead!
