i can barely express how much i love these tense and sinister vibes. i just adore an uncanny small town setting. a main character whose layers of mental illness and trauma are slowly revealed and dissected. a tumultuous mother-daughter relationship. an unsettling teenage girl. a murder mystery and a killer on the loose.

“sometimes i think illness sits inside every woman, waiting for the right moment to bloom…men, sure, they have bone snaps, they have backaches, they have a surgery or two, yank out a tonsil, insert a shiny plastic hip. women get consumed. not surprising, considering the sheer amount of traffic a woman’s body experiences.”

everything about adora and amma - their dialogue, demeanors, actions - makes me so uncomfortable. gillian flynn did a perfect job at writing a manipulative, narcissistic mother and a degrading, unstable teenager. their dynamics with each other and with camille as well as camille herself, a result of her mother’s contempt, adds so much to the psychological aspect of the story.
