We went from the first day of college to a month in... how is the reader supposed to get an insight into any new relationships building when apparently we're just hopping from one problem to another with brief interactions between characters??

Why do authors do this?
Another book where the supposed combat teacher doesn't actually teach anything. Isn't there some other way to cultivate conflict than creating contrived situations where they take the new student who knows absolutely nothing of combat or weaponry... and basically say, "I'm going to pair you with one of our most egotistical, competitive, adept students." No instruction at all, just, "Attack."
