An action that Carmen Zita did was that she made up two excuses for her son's death to the inspector Sajar. This action reveals that she must be lying about one excuse, because two can't be true. It proves that she will go all the way to not be found guilty of a crime by lying.

Jacob Skarre is a minor character in the book. He plays the role as a sidekick for inspector Sajar and solving cases. The reason he is in the story so that Inspector Sajar has somebody to work with and it is easier for him. The provide as a help to the book. Jacob Skarre really wants to solve this case and really uncover what is happening with Carmen's story.

So far in the story, Carmen Zita has given the excuse of her son's death that he wandered into a pool and drowned. However, Inspector Sejer is suspicious and he is trying to figure out evidence to expose Carmen and her excuse. The son, a two-year old boy named Tommy with Down syndrome was considered disliked by Carmen, so she could've just killed him easily because she was fed up with him or tired.
