I like how David’s story in 1 Samuel is interwoven with Psalms attributed to him. It helps to make more concrete the kinds of circumstances we may question God’s will, and how He hopes we would respond.

Jesus wept! You did not just refer to a standard Chik-fil-A outlet to offer a size comparison for Solomon’s legendary temple! 🤣 They say Catholics are gaudy, but honestly what does fast food as a community touchstone say about American Christians 😆😭

Admittedly 2 Samuel + 1 Chronicles + Psalms has been a bit of a slog. I question Cobble’s continued interpretation of Psalms as the direct words of David, rather than as compositions inspired by his life. In this light, David’s professed wisdom is Psalms really contrasts with his actions as king

Oh no. There is familiar, and there is too familiar. You cannot refer to the Philistines as « the Phillies » 😆

I had forgotten that Boaz is not just Rahab (Jericho)’s descendent, but her son directly. And he takes in a foreigner just as his mother was taken in by the Israelites. And his redemption of Ruth symbolizes the Redeemer to come, who will be his descendent. Daww 🥹

I suppose I was somewhat shocked that Samson was such a hot mess of a Nazirite. 😩 It’s easier to believe that idealized figures like Joshua or Othniel are composites, but why would you make up symbolic stories like stabbing a fat king and escaping down the toilet? Or building your own personal priesthood? Suppose Ruth is the straightforward counterpoint to these fantastical chaos tales

Well there’s Joshua. Exterminating everyone and taking over everywhere. Except not everyone and not everywhere. Given how perfect Joshua behaves, it’s easier to believe he’s a composite, and this entire narrative is a politically-convenient, accelerated rendering of the Israelites’ more gradual settlement of the territory

Numbers & Deuteronomy done! I think I would have appreciated slower pace through Deuteronomy because some of the antiquated civil codes are difficult to reconcile with modern ideas of justice

Helpful categorization of law into moral, ceremonial, and civil. Precisely described the wish you get reading detailed instructions for Tabernacle construction that you got such clear guidance from God on how to build your own life
