I read the Satanic Verses, but haven't read any other Rushdie. Is he worth reading more of?

I'm only a quarter of the way into it, but I'd say his writing lives up to the awards and the reputation. This one's giving an interesting portrayal of post-independance Bombay (traditional-secular/eastern-western identities in tension) through well-developed characters.
