Lots of advancements in the plot and character development. Every relationship between the family members is very layered- we’re seeing more betrayal and heartbreak in the flashbacks, painting better pictures of the family dynamics. I can tell the climax of the story is about to come. This story now has me on the edge of my seat. Danny is indeed becoming a romantic… just as I’d hoped for.

My perspective is constantly changing- I find myself doubting my opinions on any of the characters. Rosa is becoming more raw. I’m understanding the uncles more, but I’m not sure what to trust. I like the chemistry between Rosa and Danny, even if it’s just my hopeful perception. I like that there’s hints of Mina and Rosa having skewed perspectives/memories. Could be the uncles’ manipulation, though.

Though chapter 8 was short, it was heartwarming. We hear more about the father of Mina’s child. Such a sad story, but a glimpse into a life I’ve never had to consider. The racism, the rules. This chapter is bittersweet. You can feel Rosa and Mina’s kinship. Rosa has an understanding of Mina, while Mina feels safe with Rosa. There’s a spiritual bond, despite their separation up until now.

It’s getting a bit more mysterious. Chapter 7 is read in third person perspective of Danny Geiger. Im enjoying his character development. From Mina’s POV, he’s a criminal monster, keeping her locked up. But I’m seeing a softer side, a more human side. His heart softens at the thought of Hope’s safety, he finds excitement in Madame Mystique’s performance. I’m hoping for him to have a romantic side.

So far it’s been kind of a slow
start.
This isn’t necessarily bad, as it’s the kind of slow that invokes a feeling of wanting to get to know the characters more, rather than a feeling of boredom.
You read tales of trauma and misfortune told about the women in the story- but only get glimpses of their stories at first. It makes you slowly care for the women; you already yearn for resolution at the start.
