Getting much more into it now! I feel like the prose has got into a flow that was missing at the beginning. I still find the footnotes occasionally annoying.

It's very hard to get immersed in the world. Jack Edwards (?lol) referred to Kuang's habit of beating you over the head with the point and that very much applies to this - she doesn't trust the reader to get the idea without her jutting in. The writing feels condescending and littered with her personal opinions on history - I agree with her opinions, but imo this habit doesn't make for very readable fiction...
