I've been looking for this book for ages, and I'm so excited!
"In the Air" is an awesome introduction. I enjoy the idea that alternate history allows the author to manipulate historical figures as if they were fiction characters. It's amusing to see Howard Hughes as a rambunctious hillbilly, L. Ron Hubbard as a blowhard "war hero," and Hunter S. Thompson as a spineless government tool.
